Discovery of an Extremely Short Duration Flare from Proxima Centauri Using Millimeter through Far-ultraviolet Observations

چکیده

We present the discovery of an extreme flaring event from Proxima Cen by ASKAP, ALMA, HST, TESS, and du Pont Telescope that occurred on 2019 May 1. In millimeter FUV, this flare is brightest ever detected, brightening a factor >1000 >14000 as seen ALMA respectively. The FUV continuum emission trace each other closely during flare, suggesting could serve proxy for stellar flares become powerful new tool to constrain high-energy radiation environment exoplanets. Surprisingly, optical associated with peaks at much lower level time delay. initial burst has extremely short duration, lasting <10 sec. Taken together growing sample M dwarf flares, suggests actually common often originates burst-like events.

The moderate magnetic field on the flare star Proxima Centauri

We report moderate magnetic flux of 450 G< B f < 750 G (3σ) on the nearby M5.5 flare star Proxima Centauri. A high resolution UVES spectrum was used to measure magnetic flux from Zeeman broadening in absorption lines of molecular FeH around 1 μm. The magnetic flux we find is relatively weak compared with classical strong flare stars, but so are Proximas flaring rates and actual emission levels....

Calculations of periodicity from Hα profiles of Proxima Centauri

In this report the stellar rotation signal for Proxima Centauri is investigated. High-resolution spectra taken with UVES and HARPS of Proxima Centauri over a 13-year period is used as well as photometric observations of Proxima Centauri from ASAS and HST. The Hα equivalent width and Hα index are measured (and found to be very similar), together with other measurements, skewness and kurtosis and...

X-Ray Evidence for Flare Density Variations and Continual Chromospheric Evaporation in Proxima Centauri

Using the XMM-Newton X-ray observatory to monitor the nearest star to the Sun, Proxima Centauri, we recorded the weakest X-ray flares on a magnetically active star ever observed. Correlated X-ray and optical variability provide strong support for coronal energy and mass supply by a nearly continuous sequence of rapid explosive energy releases. Variable emission line fluxes were observed in the ...

Far - Ultraviolet Observations of NGC 3516 using the Hopkins UltravioletTelescopeG

We observed the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3516 twice during the ight of Astro-2 using the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope aboard the space shuttle Endeavour in March 1995. Simultaneous X-ray observations were performed with ASCA. Our far-ultraviolet spectra cover the spectral range 820{1840 A with a resolution of 2{4 A. No signiicant variations were found between the two observations. The total spectr...

On the habitability of exoplanets orbiting Proxima Centauri

We apply...
